(Port Arthur/Texas 1925-2008 Captiva Island/Florida) "Features from Currents", screenprint from the series: Currents, signed and dated Rauscheberg 70, inscribed HC, image size 89 x 89 cm, sheet size 101 x 101 cm, framed, browning verso, (EH)
In his series Currents of 1970 Robert Rauschenberg dedicated himself to politics and world events. He examined temporal breaks in which newspapers reported. With a freer approach than in his earlier graphics he renounced gestural punctuation. The basis of his works was now a broken grid, consisting of headlines, new products and new photos. Originally realised as collages, the images were published as two series of screenprints, one with the title Features from Currents with mostly legible text, and the other Surface Series from Currents, in which the text was darkened and obscured by superimposed patterns and inversions.
